Mental Health Awareness Month: Savouring the Moment
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year Twinings is partnering with Positive Psychology practitioner and Holistic Wellness Expert Darlene Marshall to share simple practices that build mental wellbeing.
Research in mental health shows that when we’re engaged in the present we tend to have higher wellbeing. Instead of dwelling in the past or worrying about the future, Present Moment Awareness is the skill of paying attention to what’s happening right now. Savouring the present moment has been shown to help manage stress, improve mood, and engage the senses to enjoy what’s happening around you.
Take a Savouring Break
Ready for your own wellbeing boost? Try a Savouring Break! Here’s a simple practice that uses all 5 senses to take a break, connect with your body, and savour your own present moment. It’s a small step, but one that can help build a lasting sense of wellbeing. Try it while your Twinings Tea is steeping:
Step 1: Look around at your surroundings and name 5 things you can see. If there are beautiful things around you, take a moment to appreciate them.
Step 2: Connect with your sense of touch. This could be the feeling of comfy clothes or the breeze coming in the window. Name 4 things you can feel, or reach out and touch, noticing the sensations beneath your fingertips.
Step 3: Listen to the sounds around you. If you feel safe, close your eyes and pause to listen. Name 3 distinct sounds you can hear.
Step 4: Breathe in deeply and name 2 things you can smell.
Step 5: Take the first sip of your tea and savour the taste.
Practice Regularly
By practicing this simple exercise regularly, you can grow a deeper connection to your senses and strengthen your Present Moment Awareness. When you embrace simple practices like this, you’re taking small, satisfying steps forward on your mental health and wellbeing journey.
