Yes, tea (black, green, white and oolong) does contain caffeine, but at lower levels than other beverages like coffee. For example, on average a cup of black tea has about a quarter the caffeine of a cup of coffee.

Caffeine occurs naturally in tea and coffee, and the amount varies depending on how and where the tea plant (Camellia Sinensis) is grown. This can include seasonal variations related to when the tea is harvested, soil conditions, and growing temperature. 

These values are for guidance only and may vary depending on the blend, the amount of tea in the tea bag, country of origin and steep time. The longer the steep time for tea, the stronger the extraction of caffeine. Black tea should be steeped for 3-5 minutes, Green tea for 2 minutes, and White tea for 1-2 minutes. Additionally, the cup size or the amount of water does not affect the caffeine content.

Herbals like Peppermint and Camomile are naturally caffeine free because they do not come from the tea plant (Camellia Sinensis). 

No, it is not possible to remove 100% of the caffeine from the tea plant. Decaffeinated teas contain residual amounts of caffeine, less than 0.4% per 200ml cup.

No, tea alone does not contain any calories.

At Twinings, we take allergens very seriously. None of our products contain eggs, cereals containing gluten, crustacean, fish, mollusk, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds, soya, mustard, celery, Sulphur dioxide or lupin.

However, one product does contain milk, namely, our Chai Latte K-Cups®. The manufacturing of this blend adheres to strict allergen protocols and the ingredients are kept in segregated storage areas. All allergens are detailed on the pack in line with applicable Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Regulations.

All enveloped teabag and loose tea products bearing the Kosher logo or statement in the US and Canada are certified Kosher (pareve, non-Passover) by the London Beth Din. Similarly all K-Cup® tea products that have the Kosher logo or statement in the US and Canada are certified Kosher (pareve, non-Passover) by the Orthodox Union.

Twinings’ US and Canadian decaffeinated teas use a widely accepted method of decaffeination which is approved by the US and Canadian regulatory authorities. The tea leaf goes through a process in which it is moistened with water and/or steam. The moistened tea is then mixed with a substance, which removes the caffeine from the tea, and evaporates as the tea is dried.

Natural flavours are derived from materials like spices, fruits or vegetables, or products like honey. Where a particular fruit or spice is named, such as “Natural Strawberry Flavour,” most of the flavour material is derived from strawberries. Where we use the term “and other natural flavours,” the flavour will contain derivatives from other natural ingredients. Therefore, this will
be indicated in a list of ingredients as e.g., “Natural Orange Flavour with Other Natural Flavours". In this latter case the flavouring may contain flavouring materials from lemons and tangerines in addition to oranges. It is the right balance of all these components that give a flavouring its specific taste.

As a responsible business we are working hard to minimize our environmental impact and this includes our packaging. Our enveloped tea bags are made from tea paper, which consists of wood pulp and abaca, both plant-based materials that are suitable for home composting. These teabags are sealed by being folded and held together with the cotton string.
