Tea Gets the FDA’s Seal of Approval: What the New “Healthy” Label Means for You

Great news for tea lovers! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially updated its definition of the term “healthy” on food labels, and tea now qualifies. This marks the first time in over 30 years that the FDA has revised this standard.

Under the new guidelines, which took effect on April 28, 2025, teas derived from Camellia sinensis – that’s black, green, white, and oolong teas – with less than 5 calories per serving and no added caffeine now meet the FDA's "healthy" criteria. This includes teas with added flavours, vitamins, or low-calorie sweeteners, meaning your favourite Twinings black, green, white, and oolong teas are officially recognized as a healthy choice.

The FDA’s move aligns with its broader mission to help consumers identify foods and drinks that contribute to healthy dietary patterns. Now, when you sip your tea, you can feel even better knowing it’s not just a flavourful tradition—it’s a healthful habit.

For more information on the FDA’s updated definition of “healthy,” you can read the full Federal Register document here.

Tea lovers, it’s time to celebrate! Your favourite brew is officially healthy.
